Nintendo has previously announced that Super Smash Bros. 4, the Super Smash Bros. sequel for the Wii U and 3DS, will come out sometime in 2014, but more details have not been given. The publishing company responsible for distributing the Wii U and 3DS video game has yet to release an exact release date.

Nintendo is keeping the game largely under wraps as gameplay announcements are also few and far between. What we do know is that there are some new characters joining the 21 returning favorites.

There are reported to be some minor changes, although Super Smash Bros. 4 for the Wii U and 3DS should end up playing mostly the same as the previous games.

One of the main changes announced is the mechanics of ledge-grab, often seen as a cheap tactic since the days of Super Smash Bros. Melee. It is not clear how the new mechanics will affect competitive play and the metagame.

"There are many changes being made to attack and defense options for grabbing ledges," Masahiro Sakurai, lead developer, revealed via Miiverse. "In this picture, Link is actually trumping Mario's grab. Some other changes include: Air time and accumulated damage will determine your period of invincibility while hanging on an edge. Grab controls will no longer be affected by whether you have above or below 100% damage."

Melee was the last instance of a hyper competitive combat environment, leading its adoption at the fighting games tournament, Evo 2014.

Sakurai also hinted at broadening the roster list even more by including a Capcom character this time around.

"...can't say that it's entirely out of the realm of possibility that some Capcom character could appear in the next Smash Bros," he said. "The big problem, though, comes from the idea of trying to get characters from a completely different universe to fit with the style that has been dictated by Nintendo's characters in a fighting game."

The main concern for developers is the balance of the characters, something which the creators change with every installment of the series. Regardless of the final result, many players are already itching to try the new Smash game.
