Undefeated boxers Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Gennady Golovkin are continuously being linked to each other, as previous reports indicated that the two superstars will eventually decide to collide.

However, boxing analyst and former referee Joe Cortez believes that the rumored showdown will not happen because of the huge weight disparity.

Cortez told On The Ropes Boxing Radio that the fight will only materialize if the two fighters will agree to a 154-pound catchweight. But the retired referee also expressed doubts about Golovkin's ability to move down to the junior middleweight limit to get a shot at Mayweather.

"Golovkin cannot make that weight," Cortez said. "He is a full-fledged middleweight and Mayweather walks around at 150-pounds. It would be very difficult for Golovkin to come down and Mayweather definitely won't go up to 160-pounds. I don't even think Golovkin can make a catch weight."

Golovkin, who holds a perfect 34-0 record with 31 knockout victories and has stopped his last 20 opponents, has not fought as a junior middleweight before.

Trainer Abel Sanchez recently stated that the 33-year-old Kazakh, who is the reigning International Boxing Federation, International Boxing Organization and World Boxing Association middleweight champion will do everything to reach 154 pounds just to get a fight against Mayweather.

"Golovkin has stated many times in the past that the Floyd Mayweather fight would be his dream fight and he's the only one that he would come down to 154-pounds for, the only one that he would come down for by choice, not by being forced," Sanchez told On The Ropes Boxing Radio.

Another hurdle for the rumored bout is Mayweather's willingness to come out of retirement. The Grand Rapids native insisted numerous times that he is not willing to fight again.

But Cortez is convinced that Mayweather will eventually decide to return to break the record of boxing legend Rocky Marciano. He said that the undefeated world champion will fight again in May next year to open the new arena at MGM Grand.

"I think he's gonna fight there at the new arena which is gonna open up in April, 2016. I think for Cinco de Mayo, the Mexican holiday, that's a date where they would have a big fight made," Cortez added. "Maybe that's gonna be the date where they have the big fight for that weekend."

Mayweather holds a perfect 49-0 record. The 38-year-old is coming off a unanimous decision win against Andre Berto, which came four months after cruising to a lopsided victory against Manny Pacquiao in May.
