Roger Federer cruised to the third round of the 2015 US Open Tennis, while Andy Murray avoided a huge upset on Day 4 of the tournament on Thursday at Flushing Meadows in New York.

Federer, who has been chasing his 18th Grand Slam title over the past two years, scored an impressive 6-1, 6-2, 6-1 victory over Steve Darcis of Belgium at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

The second-seeded Swiss was in top form again on Thursday. Federer tallied 11 aces and held serve for the entire match. He only faced one break point during the match and did not surrender even one point on serve in the first two sets of the match.

With the win, Federer arranged a third-round showdown with 29th seed Philipp Kohlschreiber of Germany, who also advanced after scoring a 7-6, 6-2, 6-2 victory against Lukas Rosol of Czech Republic on Thursday.

Meanwhile, third seed Andy Murray of Great Britain scored a come-from-behind 5-7, 4-6, 6-1, 6-3, 6-1 victory against Adrian Mannarino of France at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Murray, who is eyeing his second US Open title and third Grand Slam title overall, had a slow start and allowed Mannarino to win the first two sets of the match.

However, the Briton managed to bounce back and avoided early elimination. Murray admitted, though, that he was surprised by his opponent's toughness.

"He's extremely tough," Murray said of Mannarino. "He hits the ball very flat, has very short backswings, and it's very difficult to read where he's going to hit the ball. He made me do a lot of running. He was serving very well, and I was missing a few returns. It was a tough match."

Like Murray, fifth seed Stan Wawrinka of Switzerland also avoided an upset, as he escaped with a hard-earned 7-6, 7-6, 7-6 victory against unseeded Hyeon Chung of Korea.

No. 24 seed Bernard Tomic was also on the verge of losing to unseeded compatriot Lleyton Hewitt, but he managed to advance with a 6-3, 6-2, 3-6, 5-7, 7-5 victory over the former US Open champion.

In the women's side, fourth seed Caroline Wozniacki failed to recover from a slow start, and absorbed a 4-6, 7-5, 7-7 defeat to unseeded Petra Cetkovska of Czech Republic in the final match of the day at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
