Sam Smith has released his new song "Drowning Shadows," which he has dubbed the "saddest song" he's ever written.

The 23-year-old British singer is gearing up to re-release his 2014 debut album "In the Lonely Hour," with the new song included on the new disc, according to Rolling Stone.

"'Drowning Shadows' is the saddest song I've ever written and the least radio-friendly song I've ever written," Smith told Zane Lowe (via EW). "I wanted to leave people on this artistic little song and this moment. This is proper... really dark."

Smith wrote the new track before his hit song "Stay With Me" along with other songs on "In The Lonely Hour." The reason he didn't release the song on his first album was because he was dissatisfied with the production.

The song's lyrics suggest he was in a bit of a depression, trying to figure out whether it was worth it for him to go out somewhere or just to stay in.

"One would lead to gay clubs and one would go home. I was in such a lonely sad place, I'd have to decide whether to stay out or go home," he explained.

In addition to the new song, the re-release also includes covers of Whitney Houston's "How Will I Know?" and Amy Winehouse's "Love Is A Losing Game." It will also include his collaborations with Mary J. Blige, A$AP Rocky, John Legend and Disclosure.

Smith released "In The Lonely Hour" on May 26, 2014. The album, which peaked at number two on the U.S. Billboard 200 chart, produced several singles, such as "Lay Me Down," "Money on My Mind," "Stay with Me," "I'm Not the Only One" and "Like I Can."

"In The Lonely Hour: Drowning Shadows Edition" will be released on Friday, Nov. 6.
