A severed pig's head was reportedly thrown on the doorsteps of a Philadelphia mosque early morning Monday.

The Washington Post reports a worker at the mosque, which is in the same building as an Islamic school and the Arab American Development Corp., discovered the head at nearly 6 a.m.

NBC 10 Philadelphia posted an image of the scene on Twitter.

According to the Al-Aqsa Islamic Society, surveillance cameras recorded a red pick-up truck driving past the mosque on Sunday night. During the vehicle's second round, something can be seen tossed from the car window at the building's entrance.

Philadelphia police said they could not identify any of the truck's occupants.

The incident is being labeled by some as an anti-Islamic hate crime. The use of a pig's head was likely intentional as the consumption of pork is against Islamic religious principles.

Mosque spokesman and Arab American Development Corp. Director Marwan Kreidie reported the incident to local and federal authorities.

"As of now, it's under investigation with an unknown motive," said a spokesperson from the Philadelphia Police Department.

Kreidie believes the incident could be a starting point for greater hate crimes, especially in the aftermath of recent terror attacks in Paris and San Bernardino by radicalized Islamist militants.

"It's just a pig's head -- that's not a big deal; but it does send a message," he said. "I think people are worried that if they do a pig's head, they could do something more violent in the future."

Philadelphia authorities see the risk in the matter as well.

"We've got to be involved," said Officer Pete Berndlmaier of the 26th District to the Philadelphia Inquirer. "If they get away doing something like that, they are going to up the ante."

Philadelphia Mayor-elect Jim Kenny strongly condemned the act, and said the city "has a long history of coming together in the face of challenge. We cannot allow hate to divide us now, in the face of unprecedented difficulties. I ask all Philadelphians to join me in rejecting this despicable act and supporting our Muslim neighbors."

Many American Muslims have reported feeling a growing anti-Islamic sentiment in the U.S. in recent weeks, a problem exacerbated by prejudiced rhetoric by right wing politicians. This week, presidential candidate Donald Trump called for Muslims to be banned from the country.
