A teenage boy who went on a brutal stabbing spree in his Pennsylvania high school Wednesday morning was taken into custody by police officials and arraigned in court today. The student, who was charged as an adult, faces multiple charges.

According to the official criminal complaint filed on April 9 at 6:34 p.m. EST, the accused has been identified as 16-year-old Alex Hribal. Hribal was confirmed as a student at Franklin Regional Senior High School in Murrysville, Penn. by school officials.

After wounding 20 of his fellow students and one uniformed security guard in the violent frenzy that took place early on Wednesday within the hallways of the high school, Hribal is charged with 26 criminal counts.

The Associated Press reports that the teen appeared in court before Magisterial District Court Judge Charles Conway on Wednesday. He was charged with four counts of attempted homicide, 21 counts of aggravated assault and one count of possession of a weapon on school property.

Hribal was denied bail and is currently being held at the Westmoreland County juvenile detention center, according to CNN. The teens' attorney, Patrick Thomassey, told reporters that he plans to file a motion to have the case moved to juvenile court. Additionally, he said that his client will undergo a psychological evaluation to gauge his mental state and capacity.

"I'm not sure he knows what he did, quite frankly," Thomassey said. "We have to make sure that he understands the nature of the charges and what's going on here."

"It's important that he be examined by a psychiatrist and determined where he is mentally."

Four of Hribal's 21 victims, ranging in age from 14-17, remain in intensive care at a local hospital, all in critical condition. According to the Westmoreland County District Attorney, it is still up in the air as to whether one of those four victims will survive the injuries they sustained.

According to officials, Hribal entered the Franklin Regional Senior High School shortly before 7:00 a.m. EST on Wednesday, brandishing two eight-inch stainless steel kitchen knives. He allegedly made his way through the school's hallways stabbing and slashing at his victims in a seemingly random manner.

A female student at Franklin, Mia Meixner, was standing at her locker when the attack took place. She told CNN in an interview that she heard a big commotion behind her back and upon turning around she saw two fellow students lying on the floor, bleeding.

She says she then saw the suspect, who had also fallen to the ground, get up and run away to continue on his rampage. According to Meixner, Hribal was notably silent throughout the entire ordeal.

"He was very quiet, he was just kind of doing it," Meixner told CNN. "And he had this, like, look on his face that he was just crazy and he was just running around stabbing whoever was in his way."

Police Chief Thomas Seefeld says that Franklin's assistant principal, Sam King, was responsible for finally bringing the violence to an end.

King reportedly tackled Hribal to the ground and a school resource officer then managed to handcuff the suspect and hold him until police arrived on scene to take him into custody.

The school district Superintendent Gennaro Piraino told reporters that Franklin High School will remain closed for the next several days.

The middle school and elementary schools in the district will be open on Thursday and counseling will be made available to all students throughout the district.
