On Jan. 7, the Film Society of Lincoln Center and Cinema Tropical are teaming up for "Neighboring Scenes" featuring some of the most acclaimed Latin American films of the year. A number of the films have been featured at some of the world's premiere festivals, including Berlin and Cannes, and many have gone on to win key awards. The following is a list of the top five films to see at the festival.

1. "The Club"- Pablo Larrain took Berlin by storm with "The Club," a film that explores the Catholic Church's concealment of clerical misconduct. The film is extremely bleak but won the Silver Bear at Berlin and went on to be Chile's selection for the Academy Awards. It also went on to get nominated for the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Film. With so much acclaim the film was acquired by Music Box Films and is slated for early release this year. Larrain is one of Chile's most prestigious directors and his film "No" went on to get nominated for the Oscar after premiering and winning the Director's Fortnight at Cannes.

2. "Land and Shade"- The series will also screen Cesar Augusto Acevedo's directorial debut. Acevedo's "Land and Shade" tells the story of how environmental issues impact every aspect of life. The film follows Alfonso (Haimer Leal) as he returns to a small house to care for his bedridden son Geraldo (Edison Raigosa). The film made its world premiere at the Cannes Film festival and went on to win the Best First Film award at the prestigious award. It has since gone on to score victories at many of the top film festivals.

3. "Ixcanul"- Latin America had one of the best years in 2015 and this was demonstrated by Guatemala's film by Jayro Bustamante. The film became the country's first Oscar submission and won the award for debut film at the Berlin Film Festival. After acquiring so many accolades and premieres at notable festivals, Kino Lorber took on the film's distribution rights for the US. The film tells the story of Maria (María Mercedes Coroy) who is set to marry a much older foreman at the coffee plantation. However, when she learns she is pregnant from another man, she must make many hard decisions.

4. "Mar"- Chile continued to impress in 2015 and this relationship drama was among the country's most acclaimed. Having premiered at the Berlin Film Festival, "Mar" went on to score wins at multiple film festivals including Las Palmas. The movie has been compared to those of of Josephine Decker and Joe Swanberg as it is a low key story that centers on the relationship between Martin, aka Mar (Lisandro Rodríguez), and his girlfriend, Eli (Vanina Montes) as they discuss expectations and long-term commitments. The film is directed by Dominga Sotomayor, who has directed "Thursday Till Sunday," which premiered at the Los Angeles Film Festival.

5. "Bleak Street" -Two weeks before it hits theaters in the US, Arturo Ripstein's new film will make a stop at the "Neighboring Scenes" series. Ripstein's latest film is based on a true story and takes a look at the mean streets of El Defectuoso. The film boasts an all-star cast that includes Nora Velázquez, Patricia Reyes Spíndola, Juan Francisco Longoria and Guillermo López and Silvia Pasquel. The film has premiered at multiple film festivals including the Gijon Film Festival, where it took home one award.
