There is good reason to believe that The CW's "Supernatural" may indeed go on forever. While the show is poised for a Season 12 pickup, there is one thing in particular that is holding it back, but it's not the usual reason.

According to TVLine, the show not only has a huge cult following, but it is also performing even better than it did last year. Although the ratings are still weak compared to other powerhouse shows like "The Walking Dead," the numbers are still very good for the little mentioned fifth broadcast network that is still not considered to be a part of the "Big 4" group.

For fans of the show, that is a good thing. That means that there are a lot of people who watch the network exclusively for the show. The series itself is drawing a big enough share of the CW audience that it is undoubtedly a solid candidate for a Season 12 pickup.

Howver, there's just one holdup: The show's survival now rests in the hands of the stars, not the network.

CW president Mark Pedowitz has been vocal about his support for the show, and he has not given fans any reason to worry that it will be canceled. So that means the ball is in the other court.

It is the series stars, Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki, who have to commit to a 12th season in order for it to move forward. But fans should not be to worried about that either, considering the actors always seem to show enthusiasm for the project.

"Both Jared and Jensen are having a blast," Pedowitz said at the Television Critics Association winter press tour. "As long as they're having a blast, it's a great thing. The show is performing better than it did last year, better than you could ever hope. I'm very hopeful that we'll see it again."

That basically translates to Pedowitz telling the fans that he will let them know when he knows.
