The Brooklyn Nets have waived their most expensive player and seven-time All-Star Joe Johnson last Feb. 25. He is now free to join a contender, who will be willing to pay the remainder of his $24.9 million salary. That figure is the second-highest salary this season just behind Kobe Bryant.

"The Nets want to thank Joe for his many contributions to the team and the organization. Joe has been a quality professional since joining the Nets four years ago. We wish him much success in the future," Nets general manager Sean Marks said in a statement.

The Nets acquired Johnson from the Atlanta Hawks in 2012 and helped the team make the playoffs since his first season until 2015. However, it is a different time in Brooklyn this season as they currently have the second-worst record in the Eastern Conference.

"Thank you to all of the Brooklyn and New York Fans for your support during my time with the Brooklyn Nets. I want to thank the Nets organization and I wish nothing but the best to the team," Johnson wrote in a message.

Johnson is free to sign with any team on Saturday, 5 p.m., when he finally clears waivers. According to Marc Stein of ESPN, seven NBA teams are interested in the 34-year-old scorer. But who are the frontrunners to sign him?

Cleveland Cavaliers

The best team in the Eastern Conference is the favorite landing spot for Johnson, per Chris Haynes. He pointed out that Cleveland will be his "next destination." Haynes also added the fact that Cavs general manager David Griffin is close to Johnson as they previously worked together with the Phoenix Suns.

Johnson is also a logical choice for the Cavaliers to play their main scorer on the bench. He could also provide veteran experience and clutch scoring. The 34-year-old can also start at shooting guard if ever Iman Shumpert gets injured again.

Oklahoma City Thunder

The Thunder have been looking for a solid shooting guard since they traded James Harden to the Houston Rockets. The Thunder have tried many different players like Anthony Morrow, Randy Foye and Dion Waiters to play the role.

Even though Johnson is not the player he once was, he can still create his own shots. Johnson can also space the floor while Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook attack the rim. He could also potentially help the Thunder in a small-ball lineup if ever they face the Golden State Warriors in the playoffs.

Other teams interested in Johnson include the Atlanta Hawks, Boston Celtics, Houston Rockets, Miami Heat and Toronto Raptors.
