It's been a long NFL off-season and trash talk is always inevitable. Over the last few weeks, one of the biggest debates going on in the National Football League is "who is the best cornerback in the league?"

Arizona Cardinals corner Patrick Peterson was on a Phoenix radio show where he responded to Richard Sherman's tweet. Sherman posted a tweet revealing the statistics on multiple corners and safeties over the last three years, and it showed he had 20 interceptions to Peterson's 12.

Peterson responded on radio by saying "he has an easier job than me, he's a cover 3 corner. Period." Peterson also went on to say how he guards the opposing teams toughest wide receivers, and that's not always the case with Sherman because of the scheme. So that got us to thinking: Who is the best cornerback in the NFL?

Patrick Peterson

A case can definitely be made for Peterson, who is the Cardinals best defender. He was drafted No. 5 overall, and he has lived up to that draft pick status. Unlike Sherman, Peterson plays man to man on the best wide outs and doesn't rely on the system. Peterson is also a fantastic special teams player that helps in the punt return game. Although Peterson has a much bigger responsibility than Sherman, he does give up more yards, touchdowns, and receptions. An ESPN sportsnation poll showed that 53 percent of the votes thought that Peterson was better than Sherman.

Richard Sherman

Sherman is an extremely smart corner who doesn't allow much of anything to wide receivers. The number back that up. Sherman is also a physical corner that can tackle, and if he gets his hands on the ball, he can take it back to the house for a pick six. He's the leader of the Legion of Boom. What hurts Sherman is his help around him. He has safeties Earl Thomas and Kam Chancellor there to support the deep ball and on the opposite side, corner Byron Maxwell is known to shutdown players as well.

Darrelle Revis

Revis is the quiet one of the bunch. With the New York Jets, Revis was absolutely the best corner in the NFL, giving him the nickname "Revis Island." Revis will always guard the team's best receiver regardless of where he is on the field and has great football instincts. However, Revis did tear his ACL in 2012 and missed much of the season. Last season the Buccaneers chose to use him in a zone instead of man coverage inappropriately, and it hurt their defense. If Revis can return to full form this season, watch out. Although Revis has the best potential lockdown abilities, he isn't a very good tackler and doesn't adjust very well to zone coverage schemes.
