"Malificent" has won the box office and surpassed expectations. Seth Macfarlane's "A Million Ways to Die in the West" flopped.

After many pundits expected the Angelina Jolie starrer to open in the $50 million range, the blockbuster made $70 million. The success of the fantasy film was due to the popularity of "Sleeping Beauty" and the fact that it was the first blockbuster that was targeted toward women. The movie also marked the biggest box office opening for Jolie who has not appeared on the big screen since 2010. However the opening was almost $10 million off from "Oz: the Great and Powerful" and its $79 million opening in 2013 and the "Alice in Wonderland" $116 million opening in 2010. "Maleficent" has a lot of competition ahead of it, but perhaps it can retain its female audience for a longer time period than some of this year's other blockbusters.

In second place "X-Men: Days of Future Past" plummeted and only made $32.6 million. The 64 percent drop was on par with last year's "Fast and Furious 6" and a slight improvement over "X-Men: The Last Stand." "Days of Future Past" was going into its second frame with great word of mouth and great reviews. However it seems the crowded slate has not helped the movie's box office. The film has now made $162 million and could end its run with $230 million. If the film continues to fall steeply, though, it will be difficult for "X-Men: Days of Future Past" to even reach the $200 million mark.

In third place "A Million Ways to Die in the West" had a difficult time resonating with audiences. The film opened below expectations with a disappointing $17 million. The comedy, starring MacFarlane, Charlize Theron, Liam Neeson, Neil Patrick Harris and Amanda Seyfried, was marred by terrible reviews and by its incoherent marketing. Trailers did not focus on the story and instead tried to showcase every gag. The comedy also turned off audiences with MacFarlane's presence especially after his controversial Oscar appearance two years ago. After the subpar opening, it will be hard for the movie to make $50 million by the end of its run.

"Godzilla" once again had a steep drop and only made $12 million. The movie has only made $174 million, and while it has already surpassed its $160 million reported budget, the monster flick will have a hard time making the originally estimated $225 million. Expect $200 to $205 million by the end of its run.

The Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore comedy had one of the better holds. "Blended" fell 41 percent and made $8.4 million. The movie has already made $29 million, and while it is a disappointing total, it could still end its run with $50 million.

"Neighbors" continued a successful run adding another $7.7 million. The raunchy comedy starring Zac Efron and Seth Rogen has now made $128 million.

Meanwhile "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" brought in an estimated $3.7 million. The comic book adaptation has only made $192 million and will continue to struggle as it inches closer to the $200 million mark.

In art house cinemas, Cinedigm opened "Night Moves" into two theaters. The movie however only brought in $24,100, which is very disappointing considering the great reviews.

Magnolia's "Filth" crashed at the box office. While the film had already opened on VOD, the company used star James McAvoy as a selling point. Since the actor is currently starring in "X-Men," the company used that as a key marketing strategy. However the film only brought in $7,500 in two theaters.

"Chef" held better than expected but was not able to generate buzz. The film expanded into 624 theaters but only made $2 million. While it is one of the few specialty flicks to pass the $6 million mark, the Open Road Pictures culinary comedy has not been able to crossover. With a disappointing total thus far, the movie is likely to end its run with $10 million to $15 million.

Fox Searchlight's "Belle" added another $1.2 million to its domestic gross. The movie has already made $6 million but has not generated the box office revenue expected. The period drama is expected to expand a little more, but based on the results thus far, it is unlikely Fox Searchlight may add many more theaters.

Weinstein Co. continued to have mixed results. "The Immigrant" brought in an estimated $329,000 in 150 theaters. The movie has already made $1 million, and based on the first three weekends, it seems the drama may have legs.

Meanwhile "The Railway Man" fell 60 percent and only brought in $216,000. The Colin Firth/Nicole Kidman starrer has disappointed throughout its complete run and has only brought in $4 million.

IFC films expanded the thriller "Cold in July" into 69 theaters. The movie added $124,000, which brought its total to $184,000. Tribeca Films' "Palo Alto" continued to hold well. The movie had a 5 percent drop and added another $90,000. The Emma Roberts/James Franco starrer has already made $512,000, and it is considered a smash hit for the small specialty distributor.
