Katy Perry is making her comeback to the VMA stage as she performs her newest single "ROAR."

MTV has confirmed that the "Firework" singer will be returning to the 2013 Video Music Awards as a performer. Perry, who has not performed at the VMAs since 2009, will be making her very first live performance of "ROAR" on the awards show. The new single released on Monday, Aug. 12, is the first track off her upcoming album Prism.

In a radio interview with On Air with Ryan Seacrest, Perry revealed what her new song is all about.

"[ROAR is] a song about speaking up for yourself because there was a time in my life I didn't stand for anything, so I fell for everything," Perry explained. "Sometimes you can feel burdened by people or a thing or a relationship and it causes you to go inside yourself versus say 'Hey! No, this isn't okay.'"

The 28-year-old singer, who has been through a lot the past few years (separating from ex-husband Russell Brand in 2011), said that writing for her new album helped her get over issues.

"It has been very therapeutic writing these songs. I'm getting myself stronger," she told Seacrest.

As for why she named her album Prism, Perry explained that she wanted to evolve from her Teenage Dream days.

"I wanted to call the next record The Adult Reality (Doing Well in Therapy), but I thought that'd be giving away too much," she told Seacrest, adding that she chose Prism "because I've let a lot of light into my life and now I can beam that light out to my fans."

Katy will be joining other confirmed artists such as Kanye West and Lady Gaga on the VMA stage this month.

The 2013 MTV Video Music Awards will be held at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y. Aug. 25. The show will be aired live on MTV at 9 p.m.
