Actresses Who Played the Role of Selena Quintanilla

The movie "Selena," which was released in 1997, was not the only film made in honor of Selena Quintanilla.

Across different films and TV series, the Tejano music legend was given life by different actresses.

In celebration of her legacy and music, here are the actresses who portrayed Selena Quintanilla and did justice in depicting the "real" Tejano music legend.

Jennifer Lopez for 'Selena' Movie

Jennifer Lopez was one of the lucky stars who was given a chance to play the role of Selena Quintanilla in the 1997 film "Selena."

According to Hola, Lopez's role in the film was her first lead role in her career as an artist. With her role as Selena, the Latina pop diva earned her a Golden Globe Award nomination for Best Actress - Motion Picture Comedy or Musical.

In celebration of Selena's 25th anniversary, Lopez shared on Instagram some clips and photos of her in the movie and said the film was "very important" to her.

In one of the throwback videos, Lopez revealed that she absorbed everything about Selena, adding that the portrayal was a "tough job."

"Selena and her family mean so much to me, and I was so lucky to be chosen to play her. I'll never forget this time in my life, and it's an honor as an artist to have been part of the magic that is this movie," the Latina superstar wrote in the caption.

Maya Zapata for 'El Secreto De Selena'

Mexican actress Maya Zapata played as Selena Quintanilla in "El Secreto de Selena" TV series on Telemundo, according to People Español.

Zapata revealed that she faced both criticism and applause from people when she was tapped to play the role of the Tejano music legend.

"On one hand I had people saying: 'You are going to do incredible. You'll do a great job' and others were saying: 'You don't look anything like her,'" Zapata said.

The actress further noted that facing the universe of fans at that time was not so much fun for her.

Rebecca Lee Meza for 'Selena'

Jennifer Lopez was not the only Selena Quintanilla in the 1997 film. Rebecca Lee Meza portrayed the young Tejano legend in the movie.

According to Market Research Telecast, Meza was 10 years old when she played the young Selena in the film. She was selected from some 20,000 applicants who aimed for the said role.

Meza said Selena was someone she looked up to, claiming that there were not many role models for girls like her back in the day.

The "Selena" movie raised $60 million and received mostly positive reviews. However, Meza said her role had led her to receive death threats, bullying, and humiliation because people became envious of her.

Christian Serratos for Netflix's 'Selena: The Series'

Christian Serratos may be the most recent actress who gave life to Selena Quintanilla in Netflix's "Selena: The Series."

In an interview with People, the actress said it was intimidating to audition for the role and play the Tejano legend. However, she noted that she felt prepared to accomplish "what I think we did on this show," adding that she gave her all in portraying the Latina singer.

Serratos also revealed that she was a fan of Selena Quintanilla since she was a kid, claiming that she has been listening to Selena's "Baila Esta Cumbia" since she was a toddler, and it was her karaoke song as a teenager.

"I've always looked up to and really admired her [Selena Quintanilla], but I never thought I would have the opportunity to play her," Serratos said.
