If you're looking for safety on the roads, perhaps you should consider an electric car.

Electric car company Tesla Motors, Inc. said on its website that its Tesla Model S has been awarded a 5-star safety rating by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Only 1 percent of all cars tested by the federal government receive a 5-star rating. The Model S is now said to have received the best safety rating of any car in history.

The company's website says that the distinctive Model S differs from traditional gasoline-powered cars because it does not have a large gasoline engine block, which allows the car to absorb the impact of an accident. "The front section that would normally contain a gasoline engine is used for a second trunk," the website said.

The Model S was awarded 5-star ratings in a number of other subcategories, such as rollover risk; other top cars received ratings only half that. The Model S has a battery pack attached to the floor of the car, which helps with handling and safety.

The good news is a boost for Tesla Motors, Inc., which has had success in marketing the new Model S to environmentally-friendly customers who have wanted to ditch their gasoline-powered vehicles. Celebrities such as Ashton Kutcher even bought stock in the company after he bought the car.

"I feel like this is one of the first cars that has the capacity to become more valuable over time," Kutcher said in an interview with ClimateWare. "As the software starts to update within the vehicle, the car is going to get better."

As of last week, Tesla's stock had quadruped ove the last year. Following the safety rating news release on the company's website yesterday, Tesla gained 2 percent, rising to $144.90.

Tesla is in the process of expanding globally to Europe and Asia, and international fans are already excited. After the car was launched in Norway, a fan in London named Robert Llewellyn [@bobbyllew] tweeted, "1st Tesla Model S sold in Europe, can't wait until they arrive in UK."

Tesla also has the Model X, which is "designed from the ground up to blend the best of an SUV with the benefits of a minivan," says the company's website.
