Luis Suarez: Uruguay's Greatest Striker or Most Controversial Footballer?

Luis Suarez built a career as one of the best strikers in the world. He first started his career in the Uruguayan city of Salto, in the Cerro neighborhood.

He first played youth football at Sportivo Artigas before his family moved to Montevideo, where he continued playing youth football at Urreta.

As a kid, a car ran over his foot, sidelining him for a bit, but that did not stop him from pursuing his dreams of becoming an international football star.

By the time he became a professional, Suarez already had years of experience playing the game from childhood. He first joined Nacional as part of its youth team at the age of 14.

Some controversy happened a couple of years later, as the fiery Uruguayan headbutted a referee following a red card. But he managed to make it to the main team, even with his constant partying at that time.

Suarez finally debuted at the age of 18 with Nacional against Atletico Junior in the Copa Libertadores.

He managed to score his first goal in September 2005. That goal helped Nacional win the 2005-06 Uruguayan league with 10 goals in 27 matches.

It was not long before Europe came knocking, as he signed up with Dutch club Groningen at the age of 19.

He had some trouble off the court, as he did not speak Dutch or English, but he managed to play on the Dutch side's second team.

Fellow Uruguayan Bruno Silva, who also played for the team, helped him get his bearings, constantly scoring goals for Groningen.

Unfortunately, he also received several Yellow and Red Cards while on the team. It wasn't until he transferred to another Dutch side, Ajax, that he became well known.

With Ajax, Luis Suarez became a star. He soon became captain of the team and was also Eredivisie's top scorer with 35 goals in 33 matches.

During that time, he also represented Uruguay in the World Cup. Unfortunately, Suarez still had quite the temper, biting PSV's Otman Bakkal on the shoulder during a 0-0 draw.

He was suspended and fined, but the Dutch media branded him the "Cannibal of Ajax." Even though he had tendencies to bite, Suarez soon gained the notice of other European clubs, including Liverpool, which he soon signed with.

Suarez also had a few controversies there, as a three-man panel from The Football Association (FA) found him guilty of racially abusing Patrice Evra during a match against Manchester United in October. He was suspended and fined once again.

He was also suspended and fined after he bit another player. His greatest career run would be with FC Barcelona, winning back-to-back La Liga triumphs in 2018 and 2019 and having a record unbeaten streak.

As his career wound down, he rejoined Atletico Madrid before signing in once again to Uruguayan side Nacional where his career began. Sports Brief reported that Luis Suarez is considered one of the greatest footballers of all time.
