Groups E and F finally play their World Cup openers in Qatar as the 2022 FIFA World Cup continues.

Costa Rica was handily defeated by Spain. However, the night's biggest story may be the big upset pulled by Japan against the mighty Germans who are also favorites to win the World Cup this year.

Around the tournament, Canada appeared in the World Cup for the first time since 1986, facing Belgium. However, the Belgians rained on the Canadians' big World Cup return with a 1-0 win.

The Belgians got the big win undermanned as Romelu Lukaku was ruled out for the start of the tournament, according to Yahoo! Sports.

Meanwhile, the match between Croatia and Morocco resulted in the third scoreless draw so far in the World Cup.

Spain Dominant Over Costa Rica in Opener

Spain is coming into the 2022 FIFA World Cup as one of the biggest contenders to win it all. However, unlike their fellow-Spanish speaking contender, Argentina, they actually won their opening match in a dominant fashion, winning 7-0 against Central American team, Costa Rica.

According to the BBC, Spain easily ripped through the Costa Ricans, who were the last team to qualify for the World Cup. This is the largest margin of victory in the tournament so far, beating England's 6-0 victory over Iran. The dominant display happened at the Al Thumama Stadium, as a sea of red and yellow Spanish fans celebrated their team's one-sided victory.

Costa Rica was simply outclassed by the more experienced and dominant Spaniards who outpassed their Central American opponents 1,043 to 241. The team also failed to muster a single shot at the goal, as the Spanish defense was suffocating their players.

This was the biggest World Cup defeat in Costa Rica's history, as Spain looks poised to advance easily in the group.

Samurai Blue Shocks the World During the World Cup

Much like Spain, Germany was also coming into the World Cup as one of the favorites to win the entire tournament. However, they did not expect to lose in their opener, much like fellow-favorites Argentina.

Analysts have predicted that Germany should have won this one handily, given their team's dominant performances in previous World Cup tournaments. However, Japan's Samurai Blue would not go down without a fight and even pulled off a shocking upset.

Germany started off strong with a goal from Ilkay Guendongan, who successfully converted a penalty shot. The Germans played aggressively throughout, but Japan's Ritsu Doan managed to tie the game.

Takuma Asano sealed the Japanese victory during the match, with a late-game goal, and the Germans never fully recovered from the defeat.

Even though the Japanese are considered Asian powerhouses, they are not considered as good as the Germans, thus many analysts and experts predicted a German victory.
