Authorities announced the discovery of the body of a missing Illinois woman who mysteriously disappeared in Chicago more than five years ago.

According to the DuPage County sheriff's office, 22-year-old Cheyann Klus was last seen at her residence in Downers Grove, Illinois, on November 27, 2017.

The Illinois woman reportedly traveled to Chicago on the night of December 1 that year and vanished since then, never hearing from her again.

The Cook County Sheriff's office said in a statement to CBS News that they had collaborated with the DuPage County Sheriff's office and the FBI to positively identify Klus through dental records last week.

"The Sheriff's Office will continue to work with Chicago Police to investigate the circumstances of her death, but we are grateful to help bring some measure of closure to Klus' family," the sheriff's office noted.

The Cook County Sheriff's Office did not provide information about where or how Klus' remains were found.

Authorities have also yet to release details on the circumstances surrounding the Illinois woman's death.

According to CBS Chicago, Klus' family confirmed the discovery of her body in a Facebook post on Monday.

"As her immediate family [father, sisters, brothers, nephews] in mourning, we ask for privacy as we grieve the unbearable loss of a daughter, sister, aunt, and a human being," the family said.

The family added that they would have a little memorial service for Klus, and they hope that everyone can find solace in the news that she was found and will be respectfully laid to rest.

They also asked everyone to be considerate and mindful "of the sensitive nature of these circumstances and the affects this can have for our family and other families who are dealing with missing loved ones."

How Did the Missing Illinois Woman Vanish?

Chicago police found that Cheyann Klus had gone missing on December 1, 2017, after she had visited the city.

Her last known location was the 2100 block of North Kilbourn, in the Hermosa area. Her friends reported that she had skipped town to attend an "all-day, all-night private party" at her boyfriend's home, Brian Biddle.

Cheyann Klus' friend Chad Chanapai made a statement on the TV show "Crime Watch Daily" in 2018 and said from what he understood, she took her laptop and maybe a few clothes, and that's all.

Citing Biddle's statement, Chanapai claimed that Klus was being her normal self and that they were drinking and partying till late that night.

Biddle, then 38, woke up the following day to find she was gone. Biddle cooperated with the authorities, and he was never investigated as a suspect in her disappearance, The Daily Mail reported.

Twelve days later, the Illinois woman's phone placed a 911 call that pinged a cellphone tower at the Mallard Lake Forest Preserve, which is 20 miles from her boyfriend's residence and 18 miles from her own.

Authorities searched the 948-acre park on December 22, 2017, but they never found her. Once again, over a hundred personnel and dog teams searched the area, but Cheyann Klus was still not found.

Hundreds of Thousands of Individuals Go Missing in the U.S. Every Year

Around 600,000 people go missing or are unidentified in the United States yearly, the FBI's National Crime Information Center reported.

In the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System (NamUs) database, there are currently more than 21,000 active missing persons and nearly 14,000 active unidentified persons case records.

Many Indigenous women have reportedly gone missing throughout the years, and activists have demanded that this problem receive the same attention as any other missing person issue, MSN reported.
