Authorities have arrested the mother of the 6-year-old boy who had shot and wounded a Virginia teacher, AP reports.

A booking photo of the 25-year-old lady and a brief statement about her surrender to the local jail was provided by the Newport News Police Department, according to their Thursday announcement.

She posted a $5,000 bond and is free pending a status hearing in Newport News Circuit Court on Friday, her lawyer James Ellenson said.

The mother was charged with felony child neglect as well as a misdemeanor count of endangering a child by negligently storing a firearm, according to Monday's announcement from the authorities.

"She is nervous and scared because she has never been charged before, but holding up well," Ellenson wrote in an email Thursday.

Abby Zwerner, a first-grade Virginia teacher, was shot and injured while seated at a table in her classroom, according to authorities, more than three months before the woman's arrest.

The gun the boy used belonged to his mother and was legally acquired.

Zwerner sued the school district for $40 million last week, claiming that school administrators were negligent in their duty to protect students and ignored several warnings that the boy had brought a gun to school.

Prosecutors Investigate Possible Security Risk Following Virginia Teacher Shooting Incident

The Commonwealth's Attorney stated that his office had requested a special grand jury investigation into any security flaws that may have contributed to the incident from the Circuit Court, according to CNN.

During the school day, the 6-year-old was allegedly required to have a parent present "because of his violent tendencies," according to the lawsuit filed by Zwerner's attorney.

The complaint states that school officials "allowed him to remain unaccompanied on that particular day without a one-on-one companion during the school day."

Several instructors and staff members raised concerns and warning indications, including the possibility that the 6-year-old had a gun in his hands in the hours leading up to the shooting on January 6. The suit claims the school's then-assistant principal ignored these concerns and warning indicators.

According to the lawsuit, the elementary school guidance counselor and administrator said assistant principal Ebony Parker forbid instructors from inspecting the 6-year-old for a firearm since his mother would be there soon to pick him up.

The family stated that the boy has an "acute disability" and was under a care plan requiring a parent to go to school with him, yet he was alone that day.

Parents were outraged by the incident, and the school board ultimately fired Superintendent George Parker III.

Two weeks after the incident, the school's associate principal, Ebony Parker, resigned, and the school's principal, Briana Foster Newton, was relocated to another school, the location of which was not disclosed by the district.

Lawmakers Commend Virginia Teacher Shot and Injured by Her Pupil

The Virginia teacher was honored by a resolution voted by the Virginia General Assembly on Wednesday, per ABC News.

The resolution says that Zwerner has won the state's "admiration for her courage and dedication to the safety of her students."

Zwerner and his family showed up to the honor ceremony together.

"Thank you for all that you do for our children and the lives that you no doubt saved," Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears told Zwerner.

Newport News Police Chief Steve Drew previously called Abby Zwerner, the Virginia teacher, a "hero who saved lives."
