Owen Shroyer, best known for hosting Alex Jones' InfoWars conspiracy theory program, will be spending two months in prison for his role in the January 6 Capitol Insurrection. The right-wing was found guilty of a misdemeanor as he played a role in "amping up" the mob as Donald Trump tried to seize power for himself on January 6, 2021.

Shroyer never really entered the Capitol on January 6 but was instead following around his boss, Alex Jones, during that fateful day. However, he did breach the restricted area and was helping Jones amp the crowd up, as explained by US District Judge Tim Kelly.

The judge noted that Shroyer had been ordered to stay away from the Capitol grounds in a court-sanctioned agreement for disrupting a House impeachment hearing in 2019. He broke that agreement during that fateful day and has pleaded guilty to breaching restricted Capitol grounds, leading to the 60-day prison sentence, according to Politico.

Prosecutors argued that Shroyer shadowed Jones from the Ellipse after Trumo addressed his supporters and urged them to go to the Capitol. While Jones has not been charged with his role in the riot, his colleague, Shroyer, was seen with a megaphone and egged on the pro-Trump mob after they breached the Capitol grounds.

InfoWars Host Owen Shroyer Tried To Use the First Amendment Defense

For his defense, the InfoWars host tried arguing that he was just using his freedom of speech. His lawyer argued that Shroyer attended Trump's "Stop the Steal" rally as a journalist covering it for InfoWars and has gone on to accuse prosecutors of trampling on his client's First Amendment rights.

However, prosecutors argued that the First Amendment does not apply here as Shroyer was actively egging the crowd on to commit acts of violence during the infamous Capitol riot.

According to the Associated Press, Shroyer and others "stoked the fires of discontent" about driving a mob of individuals to go to the Capitol on January 6 and storm the government building while Vice President Mike Pence and the rest of Congress were certifying the results.

"Shroyer cannot light a fire near a can of gasoline, and then express concern or disbelief when it explodes," wrote prosecutors regarding the InfoWars Host's actions.

Shroyer argued that he tried to get the mob's attention so that he could get them to retreat from the Capitol. However, Judge Kelly did not buy this argument and instead pointed to a surveillance video that showed otherwise, as he was whipping up the mob and not quelling it.

InfoWars Host Owen Shroyer Called Himself a 'Martyr for Free Speech' After Sentencing

Shortly after one of its hosts was sentenced to 60 days in prison, Alex Jones's InfoWars program then featured Shroyer, who remained defiant despite pleading guilty and was sentenced for his role in the January 6 Capitol insurrection.

According to The Daily Beast, Shroyer then called himself a "martyr for free speech" during the program. He also vowed to appeal his case.
