As it turns out, a popular fan theory about how Shakira discovered that her then-partner Gerard Pique was cheating on her was false, as the singer herself recently confirmed that the "jar of jam" theory is not true at all.

According to the popular fan theory, the "Hips Don't Lie" singer discovered that her boyfriend, former FC Barcelona star Gerard Pique, was cheating on her because she discovered that the contents of her jar of jam were empty after she went home after a tour abroad. She became suspicious as neither Pique nor their kids ate jam, leading to her suspecting that he was cheating on her.

However, during an interview with The Sunday Times, the Colombian music icon confirmed that the rumors are not true despite all the memes and posts that have exploded since the fan theory first surfaced.

Shakira and the Spanish football star had an 11-year romance that resulted in them having two sons, Milan, 11, and Sasha, 9. They broke up in June 2002, with the Colombian singer leaving her Barcelona home to live in Miami, taking their two children with her. As for Gerard Pique, he soon went public with his relationship with the woman he cheated on Shakira with, Clara Chia Marti.

The breakup between the two was ugly, with Shakira blasting Pique with her songs, the most popular being "BZRP Music Sessions #53." However, Pique repeatedly shot back and trolled his ex. Despite the ugly battle between the two, they still agreed to work together for their kids, though Shakira does not want them anywhere near her ex's new girlfriend.

How Did the 'Jar of Jam' Theory About the Shakira-Gerard Pique Split Begin?

The theory was actually sparked after Shakira's music video for "Te Felicito" with Rauw Alejandro came out. The music video was released before she broke up with Pique, but one particular scene caught fans' attention and sparked the rumor.

That video showed Shakira looking inside a refrigerator, and this was enough to spark speculation. The video was released just two months before the breakup, according to PEOPLE magazine.

A 2022 interview with ShowNews Today added fuel to the fire as she was asked why she looked into the fridge during the music video. She said that it was "to find the truth," adding, "It is when I go to the fridge and find the head of Rauw Alejandro."

However, the publication noted that it was the Spanish TV show "Socialite" that actually started the claim, noting that Pique and the two children did not like the flavor of jam that Shakira loved, leading her to suspect that he was cheating after finding that the contents were gone.

Shakira Says She Sacrificed Her Career for Gerard Pique

In that same interview with The Sunday Times, Shakira also spoke about her relationship with the Spanish footballer and how much she sacrificed for him.

She told the publication that she made plenty of sacrifices for him, including putting her music career on pause to focus on taking care of their kids.

According to TMZ, she also stated that it looked like she had gotten cosmic justice as it was one of his old soccer rivals, Sergio Ramos, who presented her with a Latin Grammy after their breakup.
