During a recent appearance on "CBS This Morning," Emmy-award nominated actress Laverne Cox opposed and corrected Gayle King's comment that Cox was "born a boy."

"I was assigned male at birth is the way I like to put it, because I think we're born who we are and the gender thing is something someone imposes on you. And so I was assigned male at birth but I always felt like I was a girl," Cox interrupted.

Cox then went on to talk about how she was bullied in school because of her gender identity.

"I was chased home from school like everyday from groups of kids who wanted to beat me up. I was called names. It was pretty awful and really traumatizing. It has taken years and I'm still not over it actually," she admitted.

This isn't the first time Cox has schooled an uninformed host on transgender terminology and references.

The Advocate reports Cox also corrected daytime talk show host Katie Couric several months ago for questioning Cox about her transgender surgery and sex change.

Cox explained to Couric that talking about her genitalia and surgery is not productive in raising transgender awareness.

"The preoccupation with transition and surgery objectifies trans people." Cox explained to Couric. "And then we don't get to really deal with the real lived experiences. The reality of trans people's lives is that so often we are targets of violence. We experience discrimination disproportionately to the rest of the community. Our unemployment rate is twice the national average; if you are a trans person of color, that rate is four times the national average. The homicide rate is highest among trans women. If we focus on transition, we don't actually get to talk about those things."
