Although people expected GTA 5 to be one of the best selling games we've ever seen, most didn't expect it to rake in nearly $1 billion on the first day of sales.

The popular Grand Theft Auto series finally refreshed itself after a half decade of GTA, and based on the first day's profits, it was long overdue. The game brought in $800 million on the first day alone. Call of Duty Black Ops 2 made $500 million on the first day, but let's also not forget how often the Call of Duty games are released compared to the Grand Theft Auto series.

"In North America alone, more than 8,300 stores opened their doors at midnight to welcome fans whose loyalty and enthusiasm were rewarded with what The New York Times called 'the most immersive spectacle in interactive entertainment,'" Take Two CEO Strauss Zelnick said. "We are incredibly proud of Rockstar Games' creative achievement and could not be more pleased with the success of this launch."

The timing of the last GTA release was lined up nicely with the release of the PS3 (and the Xbox 360), so the release dates for GTA games are starting to look like a pattern. It comes as no surprise that this year's GTA release is also lined up with the release of the next biggest game consoles. However, video game fans have not received any confirmation that the GTA game would be on PS4 or Xbox One. As of now, it will only be available on PS3 and Xbox 360.

While the last GTA game took place in "Liberty City," which closely resembled New York City, the newest one is based in the fictional city of "San Andreas," which was the name of another recent GTA game.
