Samsung announced the Galaxy Round on October 9, the first smartphone to feature a curved OLED display, using flexible screen technology -- though one shouldn't be fooled into thinking that means the screen will be flexible.

The 5.7-inch Super AMOLED display with HD resolution and a "comfortable hand-grip" feel are some of the features that the device has, however. In addition, the innovative creation has the "Roll Effect," where user can roll or tilt devices on flat surfaces to check messages, missed calls, battery life and to access other functions. The Galaxy Round also has a built in "one-hand operation" feature, which assigns controls and settings to one side or the edge of the screen.

The phone, which has a 2.3GHz Snapdragon 800 processor, a 2899 mAh battery, a 13MP camera and 3GB of RAM is currently only available on the South Korean market, and has been priced at $1000 (US currency) or 1.09 million won. The phone is currently only available in "Luxury" brown, but other color will become available soon.

At the same time, LG -- competitor to Samsung -- has been developing flexible screens, bragging on October 7 that  they've begun mass production on the "world's first flexible OLED panel for smartphones", and that it would be available for purchase sometime next year. The LG Chief Technology Officer expects that the technology can harnessed, and used for wearable devices and automotive displays.

And, in other bendable technology news, Samsung is apparently developing a Galaxy Gear smartwach with a bendable screen, and Apple is developing a similar smartwatch with curved glass, called the iWatch.

It has not been said when the Galaxy Round will become available on the international market.
