The wife of potential Republican presidential candidate Jeb Bush, Columba, joined social media over the weekend. Her arrival on social media allows Columba Bush to open to the public as well as help her husband cater to the Latino vote, being Latina herself.

Columba Bush joined Twitter on Friday without much fanfare. She simply tweeted about an event she was going to attend that weekend.

A day later, she joined Instagram and posted a picture of herself with the staff of an Iowa restaurant she lunched at. In both her Twitter and Instagram profile, Bush describes herself as “Proud Mother, Grandmother, and Wife of @JebBush. Advocate for Domestic Violence and Drug Prevention, the Arts.”

Bush, who was born in Mexico, could open the Latino vote to her husband. She speaks fluent Spanish and is Mexican-American, unlike Senators Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz who are of Cuban descent. Mexican-Americans make up the largest Latino group in the country.

In another tweet, Bush showed off her fluency in Spanish, tweeting in her native language directly to the public.

“It would be a pleasure to talk with all of you through social media,” she wrote in Spanish.

“For Columba Bush, social media is perfect,"  said Jesse Manzano-Plaza, a former Bush administration staffer and political consultant with at LSN Communication in Miami, according to Politico. "It's no secret she's not as comfortable as Gov. Bush addressing a crowd. But social media helps people who are more shy or less extroverted reach out like never before. This just didn't happen 10 years ago."

Manzano-Plaza emphasized the importance of winning over the Latino vote and social media can prove to be the key since Pew Research Center data showed 68 percent of Latinos use social media, compared to 58 percent of the overall population.

However, Columba Bush is not the only one joining social media. President Barack Obama finally started his own Twitter account, which has gathered almost 700,000 followers just hours after he tweeted for the first time.

Bush has only gathered almost 2,000 followers since Friday.
