Katy Perry has registered the track "1984" with music publishing giant BMI, fueling rumors she plans to release it as a diss song on longtime rival Taylor Swift.

According to HollywoodLife, even as Swift's current hit "Bad Blood" has continued to climb the Billboard charts, Perry has been hard at work putting the finishing touches on an album titled after the year she was born, just as Swift previously did with "1989."

In registering the song title with BMI, Perry has legally turned it into a copyrighted piece of work she is free to publish at any time. HollywoodLife previously reported the "Heat" singer enlisted the help of on-again, off-again boyfriend John Mayer – who is said to be Swift's inspiration for "Dear John" – in writing new music for a feature project.

"Katy thinks revenge is a dish best served cold," a source told the website. "She's even more determined to show people what she called 'the real Taylor.' She's writ in some big, anthemic-type song that'll feature dirt on Taylor that John's told her from when they used to date."

The two divas feud dates back years, stemming from when Perry is alleged to have stolen several of Swift's backup dancers. It became a matter of public record when Swift, who was teasing her song "Bad Blood" ahead of her "1989" release last fall, talked about a woman who she felt betrayed by.

Things have hit a crescendo over the last several months with the release of Swift's star-studded video for the song, which she debuted at last month's Billboard Awards.

HollywoodLife reports Perry is also slated to be featured in an upcoming celebrity-filled video produced by Madonna, where Rita Ora will also make an appearance. Ora previously dated Calvin Harris, who is now dating Swift.

The timing of it all has some speculating that this is another jab at Swift.
