The hit TV show "Gotham" based on the fictional city in the DC Comics "Batman" is making new strides as an original story, casting a familiar name for the role of a tough-as-nails cop.

According to TV Line, Michael Chiklis has been cast in the role and is perhaps best known for his starring role on FX's "The Shield" and "The Commish."

Chiklis played the hard-hitting detective Vic Mackey on "The Shield" who gave rise to the popularity of the antihero on modern TV shows. Mackey was a character the audience loved to hate. He was both a crooked cop and dedicated crusader for the greater good, no matter how the task was accomplished. He gave several people such extreme beatings on the show it was hard to sympathize with him.

That being said, he has been cast in a similar role on "Gotham." His character is Captain Nathaniel Barnes, and he comes to the cast as a series regular. Barnes will be a staunch crusader for criminal justice, where he will make enemies on both sides of the law.

Barnes will initially prove to be one of Gordon's (Ben McKenzie) biggest allies on the show. But what the future holds for the duo's relationship will eventually sour.

Executive producer Bruno Heller announced at Comic Con this year Season 2 of the hit show on Fox will be all about the rise of the villains. The criminals that emerge will also be faced with new heroes, as the city eventually falls into chaos and crime runs rampant.

McKenzie told fans at Comic-Con they can expect an arms race to play out in Season 2. That also means corruption will start playing a bigger role in the series.
