The Carolina Panthers are scrambling to fill a void at Wide Receiver following the sudden injury of Kelvin Benjamin, who tore his ACL in practice on Wednesday and will miss the entire 2015-16 season.

Many NFL experts believe the Panthers will turn to free agency. Benjamin, who was entering his second season in the NFL, led the team in receiving yards, touchdowns, and yards per catch in the 2014 season.

The most notable free agent wide receiver at the moment is Reggie Wayne. Wayne is a future Hall of Famer who spent all 14 of his seasons with the Indianapolis Colts. T.Y. Hilton emerged as the new star wide out in Indianapolis recently, but Wayne still had 779 yards last year on 64 catches. Only one player on the Panthers active roster had more than 64 catches last season, tight end Greg Olsen.

Wayne could be a great fit for the Panthers for the right price. Wayne is a veteran player who could teach the younger players (even Cam Newton) a few things and contribute to a third consecutive NFC South title. As good as Newton has been, he is very limited with his passing game. Having Wayne on the roster won't stretch the field much, because he has lost a step, but Wayne could certainly help the Panthers passing attack.

Previous reports indicated that the Green Bay Packers and New England Patriots were interested in signing Wayne, but so far, no deal has been reached. Wayne is an unrestricted free agent.

If Wayne's asking price is too much, the Panthers could go in another direction. Wes Welker is currently an unrestricted free agent after playing the last two seasons with the Denver Broncos. Welker is one of the best slot receivers of all-time having been a part of a Patriots team that made it to two Super Bowls. Welker is a fearless player who isn't afraid to catch passes in the middle, and he can help move the chains.

Welker is also two years younger than Wayne.

The biggest issue here is health. Because Welker does so much in the slot area, he is more prone to head injuries, and that's been exactly the case. Welker has missed several games in his career because of concussions and "concussion like symptoms." This scares a lot of general managers and owners because lawsuits for head injuries by former players are at an all-time high.

More than likely, Welker will come at a cheaper price than Wayne given his injury history, but he could be worth it. A Newton-Welker combination does have some promise, especially with option plays. Newton is a very mobile quarterback, and Welker is very quick.

Both Wayne and Welker are free agents who the Panthers could very well look at to replace Benjamin. Brandon Lloyd, Santana Moss and Donnie Avery are also free agents.
