The crowded movie season will begin this weekend as studios get ready for Oscar season and hope their films catch on with awards voters. As a result this weekend will see one action film and a number of dramas.

Weekly Highlights

"The Transporter: Refueled" : EuropaCorp will reboot the "Transporter" series after a seven-year absence. The new film tells the story of Frank Martin, a former special-ops mercenary who enters into a game of chess with a femme fatale and her three sidekicks. They are looking for revenge against an evil Russian kingpin.

Excitement for the film is about the same as the original films, and it looks like it will open at around $8 million over the Labor Day weekend. The film has received no reviews, but these films have never thrived on good reviews. It will be interesting to see how fans receive the movie now that Jason Statham has been replaced by Ed Skrein, a less known actor.

"Un Gallo con Muchos Huevos" : Pantelion is releasing the first Spanish animated film in the U.S. The movie tells the story of Toto, who become a fighting rooster to help save his family's home. The movie is voice by some of the most famous Mexican actors, including Angelica Vale, Maite Perroni, Omar Chaparro, Ninel Conde, Carlos Espejel and Bruno Bichir. While there has been a small marketing campaign and a limited release is planned, the movie is likely to attract Latino audiences and could breakout into the mainstream.

Other Releases

The Sundance film "A Walk in the Woods" will be released after a standout run at the festival. Broad Green Pictures will release the movie in wide release, a first for the new company. The film stars Robert Redford, Emma Thompson and Nick Nolte, and it is about two veterans who go on a hiking trip across the Appalachian Trail. While reviews are mixed the company is pushing it into 1,960 theaters.

Chris Evans, known for his role Captain America will make his directorial debut in "Before We Go." Radius TWC is releasing the movie is limited release after several weeks on demand. The movie premiered at the Toronto Film Festival last year also stars Alice Eve, and it scored terrible reviews. Currently the movie has a zero percent aggregate score on Rotten Tomatoes, and it does not look like it will get any better.

Meanwhile Open Road will re-release "Dope" to improve its theatrical box office and see if it regains awards buzz. The highly acclaimed Sundance film underperformed when it was first released, so this is a chance to recuperate some ground.

Other releases include "Bloodsucking Bastards" by Shout! Factory, "Number One Fan" by Distrib Films and Rialto will re-release "Rififi."

The Mexican film "La Jaula de Oro" will also open after a two year festival run that got the film over 80 awards, including one at the Cannes Film Festival.
