Klay Thompson was mentioned in several NBA trade rumors earlier in the offseason, but former coach Mark Jackson believes that the shooting guard will stay with the Golden State Warriors.

Thompson, who is coming off the best NBA season of his young career, could become a restricted free agent next summer if the Warriors fail to strike a contract extension with him until the deadline on Oct. 31.

When asked about Thompson's contract situation with the Warriors, Jackson believes that the 24-year-old guard will not go elsewhere because he expects Golden State to secure his services for the next several years.

Jackson, who was replaced by new Golden State coach Steve Kerr this offseason, also pointed out that Thompson deserves to get a maximum contract from the Warriors, calling the three-year veteran the best two-way guard in the NBA today.

"He's a guy that will make a boatload of money and in my opinion the best two-way shooting guard in the world, and it's not even close," Jackson said of Thompson via San Jose Mercury News. "He's got to get the max contract."

Thompson, the 11th overall pick in the 2011 NBA Draft, had another great year last season when he averaged 18.4 points to go along with 3.1 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game.

The former Washington State standout also impressed for Team USA during their campaign at the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup, where he helped the national squad capture the gold medal.

Warriors general manager Bob Myers declined to reveal in a recent interview whether or not the team is willing to offer Thompson a max deal, but he pointed out that they want to keep Thompson for a long time, knowing that he and Stephen Curry form what is considered by many as the best backcourt in the league.

"I think most people believe it to be the best, one of the best backcourts in the NBA, and I don't think that that's a minority opinion. I think it's a majority opinion," Myers said. "That's part of the team you don't worry about too much, right? I mean, that part is good, which is hard to find."
