Zooey Deschanel recently converted to Judaism for her husband Jacob Pechenik.

The 35-year-old actress made the switch to the new religion just before getting married, according to Us Weekly.

"Zooey converted to Judaism for Jacob," a source told the magazine.

In the past, the "New Girl" actress has been open about not attaching herself to any one religion, despite the fact her mother is Roman Catholic and her father is a Quaker.

"My family is liberal," Deschanel said. "I was raised in the 'you can be whatever you want' kind of way. And in the end, I was like, 'Eh.'"

Deschanel and producer Pechenik wed in a secret ceremony in June. Over the summer they also welcomed a baby girl named Elsie Otter. The pair announced their engagement in January after announcing Deschanel's pregnancy.

Last month Deschanel stopped by the "Today" show to explain why the couple decided on this unusual name for their daughter.

"We just really liked the name Elsie and then we both love otters, they're very sweet and they're also smart," Deschanel said. "They use tools. ... They hold hands while they sleep. ... They're wonderful animals."

Deschanel currently stars in "Rock the Kasbah" alongside Bill Murray, Leem Lubany, Bruce Willis and Kate Hudson. The comedy is about a music manager (Murray) who discovers a teenage girl with talent (Lubany) while on a music tour in Afghanistan. He then takes her with him to Kabul and has her compete on the talent show "Afghan Star." The film hit theaters on Oct. 23.

Meanwhile, Season 5 of "New Girl," the show that usually stars Deschanel but which will not feature for a period due to her maternity leave, will kick off in January. Megan Fox will fill in on the show as a tenant renting out Deschanel's character's room.
