Damon will suffer from major changes in wake of his escape from the Phoenix Stone in Friday's all-new episode of "The Vampire Diaries."

In last week's midseason premiere, Damon managed to escape the hell hole he was trapped in as a result of being stabbed with the Phoenix Stone. However, when he finally made it out, he had a hard time getting a grip on reality. He also realized his feelings for his mother were deeper than he thought after he was forced to relive painful and buried emotions.

According to executive producer Caroline Dries, Damon will continue to suffer from the after effects of living in a hell-like prison world in the upcoming episode, "Things We Lost In The Fire."

"Even though Damon has escaped hell ... [when] you exit that Phoenix Stone, you're a changed person," she told TVLine.

The showrunner went on to say Damon will now experience "hell on earth" as he learns to cope with the aftermath.

"What we get to see in the next episode is Damon really really mess things up. Stefan, who had his own journey that we didn't see -- and we're not going to see the way we saw with Damon -- has been through that. We're trying to create a bit of intrigue; Stefan has survived it and learned some lessons from it, but can Stefan warn Damon in time of what it means to actually get out of there?"

Dries also promised that fans will learn more about Enzo's backstory later on in the season.

"Enzo's universe is going to broaden the scope of the show towards the end of the season," she says. "It's going to enlighten us about Enzo's backstory. We'll get to know him and that's what'll help bring him closer to Bonnie."

The synopsis for the episode also teases Tyler's return to Mystic Falls, reports Dread Central.

"With the traumatic effects of the Phoenix stone taking a toll on his brother, Stefan (Paul Wesley) attempts to help Damon (Ian Somerhalder) regain his grip on reality, while secretly struggling with his own experience in the stone. Elsewhere, Matt (Zach Roerig) and Bonnie (Kat Graham) deal with the fallout after Julian (guest star Todd Lasance) and his men take over Mystic Falls, leading Matt to spiral out of control and into trouble with an officer named Penny (guest star Ana Nogueira). Meanwhile, Tyler (guest star Michael Trevino) returns to town for Alaric's (Matt Davis) baby shower, and Caroline (Candice King) makes an upsetting discovery involving Alaric and his future plan for the babies."

In Episode 12, viewers will be introduced to a vampire huntress named Rayna (Leslie-Anne Huff) who is out to get Stefan. During an interview withTVGuide.com, "TVD" star Annie Wersching teased why Rayna will go after the young Salvatore brother.

"Pretty much everyone gets in her cross-hairs," the actress told TVGuide.com. "But anyone with the X scar on their body - it opens up for Stefan as you can see in the flash-forwards - and she's obviously hunting him. Stefan is the biggest goal for her that she's trying to flush out."

Dries added that "As we saw Stefan and Damon both get stabbed by that sword, we start to understand what the heck is going on with that mythology," she explained. "Once we understand the rules of that sword and who owns it and who's compelled by the sword, essentially, to kill vampires, it'll all make sense."

"The Vampire Diaries" returns with "Things We Lost In The Fire" on Friday, Feb. 5, at 8 p.m. ET on The CW.
