Manchester United is still a couple of spots behind Champions League qualifications. Louis van Gaal will be staying as manager at Old Trafford next season to develop the team's young players. However, United legend and football pundit Paul Scholes suggested three names for the Red Devils to sign this upcoming summer transfer window.

"I'd like Luka Modric. How old is he now. Might be a bit too old, but he's a great player. I like Raphael Varane. I said realistic and I'm picking Real Madrid players? We probably need a centre-forward but there's not too many of them about so I'm going to say I'd like us to bring Paul Pogba back," Scholes said.

The former England midfielder said that finding a solid central midfielder and defender should be the priority of the team this July. He also added that an additional striker is necessary but the lack of options this summer may leave United with just Anthony Martial and Wayne Rooney up front.

The team recently lost 2-0 to Liverpool in the first leg of the UEFA Europa League Round of 16. They will be hosting the second leg on Thursday and hopes to overcome the odds against one of their rivals.

Since arriving in 2014, van Gaal has spent about £250 million on transfers but has failed to bring United back to its past glory. United will likely need to spend a huge amount of money to buy the three players. Let's take a look at the three players and what they could bring to Old Trafford.

Modric and Varane

Luka Modric is just 30 years old and has some good years left in him. United has not had a midfielder like the Croatian international that could dictate the tempo of a game with his passing. Scholes had that same ability but left a hole in that United midfield when he retired in 2013.

The same can be said for the defense as they have not replaced Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic properly. Chris Smalling is their best defender and he would benefit being partnered with Raphael Varane. The 23-year-old French international is one of the best young center backs in the game today.

Paul Pogba

Can you believe the Red Devils let Pogba leave for free to Juventus last 2012? He is one of the best players in the world today. Clubs like Barcelona, Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid are all vying for his services this summer.

The 23-year-old is known for his energy on the field that has no known major weakness. He controls possession and makes good decisions with the ball that no other player at his age can do.
