The ongoing production for the upcoming "Maze Runner: The Death Cure" movie suffered an unfortunate setback after lead star Dylan O'Brien was involved in a freak accident while filming. He was rushed to a hospital in British Columbia.

"Dylan O'Brien was injured yesterday while filming 'Maze Runner: The Death Cure' in Vancouver, Canada," according to a 20th Century Fox statement. "He was immediately transferred to a local hospital for observation and treatment. Production on the film will be shut down while he recovers. Our thoughts go out to Dylan for a full and speedy recovery."

O'Brien, was ran over by a car and may have suffered multiple broken bones. The 24-year-old actor is also known for his role in the MTV series "Teen Wolf" where he plays the role of Stiles.

"Maze Runner 3" Release Date and Cast

"Maze Runner: The Death Cure" is set to hit theaters on February 2017. The film is the third installment in the "Maze Runner" series. Both of the earlier films were widely-received in the U.S. box office with the 2014 "The Maze Runner" earning a little over $100, while the 2015 "Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials" brought in $82 million.

The upcoming film will be under the direction of Wes Ball, same as with the two earlier "Maze Runner" movies. The film series is based on a young adult (YA) novel by American writer James Dashner, who also wrote "The 13th Reality" series and "The Mortality Doctrine" series.

Joining O'Brien for the returning cast of "Maze Runner: The Death Cure" are Thomas Brodie-Sangster as Newt, Rosa Salazar as Brenda, Ki Hong Lee as Minho and Dexter Darden as Frypan.

"Maze Runner" Writer Expresses Optimism After Accident

Dashner, meanwhile, took to his Twitter account to confirm the unfortunate incident, but has expressed a more optimistic tone, saying that O'Brien is going to be fine. He also assured the loyal fanbase of the "Maze Runner" franchise that the production, while temporarily on hold, has not been cancelled altogether. He said that for now, the recovery of the actor is of utmost priority.

"I just want to let everyone know that yes, Dylan was hurt, but that he's going to be okay. Not life threatening in any way," he tweeted. "Production is postponed but certainly not cancelled. All that matters now is that Dylan recovers."
