One of the world's top scientific magazines has awarded the discovery of gravitational waves its highest yearly honor to an experiment searching for ripples in the fabric of the universe.

According to SPACE, the scientific magazine has announced on December 22. The Breakthrough, of the 2016 Award conferred to the collaboration of scientists who have built and operate the Laser Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory (LIGO). This is one of many awards.

Scientists are working at the LIGO in the US detected a burst of the ripples emitted by two colliding black holes 1.3 billion light years away. This observation has confirmed the existence of "gravitational waves".

The existence of gravitational waves was first predicted by Albert Einstein in 1915. But the confirmation announcement made in February on a century-old prediction by Einstein and was front-page news around the world.
