Vice President Kamala Harris has finally moved into the vice presidents' official residence at the Naval Observatory grounds in Northwest Washington.

Harris' settled into the residence on Tuesday night, and it was delayed for about two months because of the property's renovations.

The official residence is a Queen Anne-style, six-bedroom house, New York Post reported. The house sits on the 12 acres of the 72-acre grounds of the still operational U.S. Naval Observatory (USNO). Previous vice presidents have welcomed various guests into the residence, including dignitaries and foreign leaders.

Kamala Harris' Residence in Naval Observatory

Kamala Harris will be the eighth vice president to live in the 9,150-square-foot mansion on the observatory's grounds. The naval observatory is utilized by scientists to observe the sun, moon, planets, and selected stars in publishing astronomical data needed in navigation.

Kamala Harris' moving in the vice presidents' official residence was announced on Twitter by her chief spokeswoman, Symon Sanders.

Sanders tweeted that Kamala Harris and second gentleman Doug Emhoff moving into the Naval Observatory residence were initially postponed due to the home's renovations and repairs.

Sanders noted that the repairs included maintenance on the HVAC system, refurbishing some of the hardwood floors, and replacing the chimneys' liners.

It can be recalled that the Secret Service arrested an armed man from Texas outside the Naval Observatory last month. The man parked his car in a D.C. garage, where the authorities were able to discover a rifle and ammunition alongside several handguns inside the vehicle.

Because the federal government already paid the vice president's lodging for the next four years, Kamala Harris is now selling her high-rise residence in Washington for about $1.995 million.

Since her inauguration, Harris and Emhoff stayed in the Blair House, the president's official guest house located across the street from the White House.

In February, Kamala Harris moved out of her condo located in San Francisco. The vice president sold the property for $799,000.

The Naval Observatory

The Victorian residence on the Naval Observatory grounds served as the home of every vice president, which started with Walter Mondale in 1977, the People reported.

President Joe Biden also resided in the property when he served as vice president during the Obama Administration. The residence became the residence of families of other previous vice presidents, including George H. W. Bush, Dan Quayle, Dick Cheney, Mike Pence, and Al Gore.

In 2012, the Bidens created the Family Heritage Garden of the vice president. The said garden is located on the front lawn of the residence.

On the other hand, Mike Pence reportedly added a beehive to the 12-acre property.

The mansion, where Kamala Harris will stay, was built in 1893 and was originally for the USNO superintendent. In 1974, Congress agreed to revamp the Naval Observatory residence as the home for the vice president.
