A one-year-old boy is now fighting for his life after being shot in the head during a road rage shooting in Chicago on Tuesday, according to officials.

The boy was reportedly in a car driven by his grandmother when shots were fired at around 11 a.m. along the Lake Shore Drive, ABC News reported.

Cmdr. Jake Alderden of the Chicago Police Department's 1st District said that multiple shell casings were recovered across those two blocks along the expressway.

"At this time, it appears that they are completely unknown to each other and there was a dispute possibly over somebody not letting somebody into a lane of traffic," Alderden said as reported by New York Post.

A driver, who witnessed the road rage shooting, noted that a lady appeared and said she was trying to get into the car next to her, and her baby has been shot.

Authorities found a gun in the grandmother's car. However, it was not clear if it was fired. The second vehicle reportedly involved in the shooting incident fled the scene. But one person was also being questioned in connection with the shooting incident.

Violence in Chicago

Police said that Wind City has been experiencing one of the most violent years in its history, according to The Sun reportThis was not the only shooting that took place this week.

Seven people were shot on Monday night during a fight that escalated the city's South Side. At around 11:10 p.m., gunfire erupted, and shots were exchanged.

The victims include a 39-year-old woman who was shot in her abdomen and left arm. Also, a 28-year-old was shot in the torso, and a 44-year-old man was shot in his right arm, Fox News reported.

A 31-year-old man also walked into a hospital with a gunshot wound to his leg, but now in good condition. Other victims reported were two men, ages 34 and 21, with gunshot wounds to their right foot.

Despite the number of victims with gunshot wounds, no arrests have been made. Thirty-four people were shot, and eight people were killed in Chicago over the holiday weekend.

Chicago police released crime statistics for 2020 showed an increase in gun violence, murders, and carjacking compared to the previous year.

But police reported a 20 percent decrease in thefts and sexual assaults and a nine percent decrease in burglaries.

Police said that compared with the 2019 data, shootings and murders jumped more than 50 percent, NBC Chicago reported.

Other major cities in the state also recorded a spike in shootings and murders in 2020. Police connected this sudden uptick to the challenges brought by the COVID-19 pandemic and periods of civil unrest.

"This has been a year that has presented numerous challenges to law enforcement, and I am proud of the way Chicago police officers have risen to the occasion," Supt. David Brown said in the report.

Authorities said that 2020 closed out with a total of 3,261 shootings citywide and 4,033 shooting victims. There were also 769 murders, as compared to 2019's 495.
