The Sussex couple - Prince Harry and Meghan Markle - have decided to step out of their senior roles in the British royal family in January 2020.

Harry earlier revealed in an Oprah Winfrey interview that by stepping down from his role, he was cut off financially, which led him to use money left to him by his mother, Princess Diana, to help pay for the security of his family.

But The Washington Post reported that Prince Charles' Office, Clarence House, published in its annual accounts, covering the period from April 1, 2020, to March 31, 2021, that he paid his sons and their families a sum of $6.3 million for their "official expenditure."

A spokesman for Clarence House explained that the Prince of Wales "allocated a substantial sum" to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex to support them with their transition in stepping down as senior members.

The spokesman said it has stopped giving funds to the Sussex couple in the summer of 2020 and that the two are now "financially independent." Royal accounts' annual report also offered some details into the inner workings of the royal household.

In 2020, Queen Elizabeth II received the equivalent of $120 million from the Sovereign Grant, the publicly funded contribution to the work of the royal family.

The money is also used to pay for staff and the upkeep of royal residences. In 2020, the bill for over 500 full-time employees amounted to around $33.7 million.
