House Democrats have voted down the Republicans' request for documents in relation to President Joe Biden's family's "international business schemes," including Hunter Biden's business deals.

According to Fox News, the House Oversight and Reform Committee considered a resolution of inquiry that asks Biden to deliver all documents in his possession concerning the business dealings of Hunter and other Biden family members and associates.

However, House Democrats rejected the resolution on Tuesday after about two hours of debate. Republicans noted that Hunter's business dealings, at best, show how he was able to benefit from his father's name to earn million.

The GOP members also argued that, at worst, it could have an inappropriate influence on Biden's foreign policy.

The top Republican on the oversight committee, Rep. James Comer, said it was time for the president to "answer some questions about his participation in his family's business dealings," which involved the Chinese Communist Party.

Other Republicans also referred to Hunter's laptop, which revealed that the president's son had made money in Ukraine and China.

For his part, Biden has repeatedly said that he knows nothing about his son's business activities.

Florida Rep. Byron Donalds dismissed that claim and said, "frankly, it's a lie."

Republicans' Request for Hunter Biden Probe

James Comer had also accused Joe Biden of peddling "access to the highest levels of government to enrich themselves," adding that it was crucial that people get answers due to national security concerns, CNN reported.

The Republican lawmaker noted that if the Democrats voted against the resolution, they were "continuing in their coordinated effort to shield a potentially compromised President" over a vital congressional oversight.

Meanwhile, Chairwoman Carolyn Maloney accused the Republicans of trying to "smear" the president and boost former President Donald Trump by targeting Biden's family members.

The Democrat lawmaker of New York noted that it was a "nakedly partisan effort."

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell then called on the Biden administration to appoint a special counsel to probe Hunter, adding that it was needed to "avoid appearance or impropriety."

Hunter Biden Probe

In March, ABC News reported that a source said the federal investigation into Hunter Biden's tax affairs has intensified, with an increasing number of witnesses appearing before a grand jury.

The U.S. Attorney's Office for Delaware has been leading the investigation into the president's son.

Sources said at the time that prosecutors had not reached a decision yet on whether criminal charges against Hunter are warranted.

There is also a debate on whether Hunter's admitted past drug abuse can serve to undermine a criminal case over his financial decision-making. Hunter's attorney, Chris Clark, did not comment on the matter at the time.

The federal probe signifies the first possible legal hurdle the president's son could face in relation to his overseas work.

Prosecutors in Delaware were looking at the tax implications of Hunter Biden's work in China and Ukraine, among other foreign business dealings.
