Following their winless 2022 season, Colorado Buffaloes sacked coach Karl Dorrell Sunday, according to the university. They also fired their defensive coach, Chris Wilson.

According to the school, offensive coordinator Mike Sanford will take over as interim head coach. Former Western Kentucky head coach Sanford had a 9-16 record in two seasons (2017-18).

Gerald Chatman, a defensive line coach, was appointed as the temporary defensive coordinator.

According to the university, Dorrell will receive around $8.7 million in a buyout, ESPN reported.

"I want to thank Karl for his hard work in leading our program since 2020," said athletic director Rick George.

"Ultimately, however, the results on the field did not measure up to our expectations and standards, which made it necessary for us to make this change at this time. It was an extremely difficult decision, and I wish Karl all of the best in his future endeavors."

Colorado Buffaloes Coach Karl Dorrell Has Been With the Team for Only Three Seasons

Colorado is one of two FBS teams with no wins through the season's first five weeks. The Buffaloes have given up an average of 43.2 points per game but only scored 13.4 points per game. On Saturday, Colorado lost to the Wildcats by 23 points, their smallest loss of the year.

According to Sports Illustrated, Dorrel has been leading Boulder for three seasons. He led the Colorado Buffaloes to a 4-2 record during the 2020 season, cut short by a pandemic.

The season ended with a defeat to Texas in the Alamo Bowl. Colorado's record last year was 4-8, and Dorrell's record with the team was 8-15.

The team had only two winning seasons in the past 16 years, including the 2020 season. They have sacked three head coaches after leaving the Big 12 in 2011: Jon Embree in 2012, MacIntyre in 2018, and Dorrell most recently.

Mel Tucker was hired as the new head coach, replacing MacIntyre. However, he only stayed in Boulder for one season. In 2019, he moved on to Michigan State, where he made more than double the $2.4 million he had made at Colorado, despite having a 5-7 record. This brought Colorado Buffaloes coach Karl Dorell to the team in February 2020, USA Today noted.

"It just worked out to be a perfect scenario for me," he said later that year.

The way things turned out almost seemed like a fluke. George was looking for stability after Tucker left without warning. He thought he had found it in Dorrell, a coach with years of college and professional experience who already owned a home in Boulder County.

Dorrell, 58, was also a part of the Colorado Buffaloes' national success in the 1990s when he worked as an assistant coach for head coach Rick Neuheisel and CU coaching legend Bill McCartney.

Meanwhile, Arizona defeated Colorado 43-20 on Saturday, marking the team's most recent setback. The closest game Colorado has played this season was the 23-point loss. In the season opener, TCU thrashed Colorado 38-13, and the Buffaloes have not really been tough in any games since.
