Officials on Thursday said teen actor Tyler Sanders, who had appeared in "The Rookie" and "Fear the Walking Dead," died after an accidental fentanyl overdose.

According to a Los Angeles County Medical-Examiner Coroner's report, Sanders, who was only 18, passed away in his apartment in Glendale last June 16.

The teen actor's friend found him unresponsive inside his locked apartment and called 911. The night before, Sanders had admitted to his friend via a text message that he was using fentanyl.

Drug paraphernalia was also found at the apartment. The Los Angeles Times reported that the teen actor allegedly had a drug usage history, and evidence of drug use was uncovered during the investigation.

A recent spike in deaths in Los Angeles County and throughout California has been linked to fentanyl usage. Tyler Sanders' cause of death findings come at a time when this trend is still expected to increase.

Tyler Sanders' Family Reacts to Teen Actor's Cause of Death

Since Tyler Sanders' death, his family has spoken out passionately to raise awareness about mental health, the Deadline reported.

David Sanders, Sanders' father, said, "Tyler was an ambitious, hard-working actor who was dealing with deep and persistent depression."

David claimed that his son tried many treatments but did not feel better, so he started experimenting with medications.

He noted that Sanders' drug use was not recreational but a means to deal with his serious mental health problem.

"While we continue to mourn his death, we are determined to share Tyler's story in hopes of furthering the conversation around this pervasive issue," he added.

Ginger Sanders, the teen actor's mom, also made a public statement that says losing her son due to an accidental fentanyl overdose has been tough.

She added that she is hoping for people to see that they are just like any other family and never imagined something like this happening to them.

She claimed that Sanders' continuous depression persisted despite his extensive network of people who cared for him, and likely because of his depression, Sanders yearned for deeper connections and brightening the lives of those around him.

Ginger added that her son was internally struggling but was outwardly set on making sure no one else had his feelings.

"Tyler loved the Lord, loved people, and did his best every day. It is our sincere prayer that our story might save others," she noted.

Tyler Sanders Career

The Prime Video series "Just Add Magic," starring Tyler Sanders, ran from 2015 to 2019 and garnered him a nomination for a Daytime Emmy.

Before his passing, Tyler Sanders gave fans a glimpse into his off-screen teenage life by documenting his adventures, such as white-water rafting, attending Coachella, skydiving, and improving his health, PEOPLE reported.

His most recent update featured a series of images showing him dressed in a suit and was titled "Styling."

Apart from "The Rookie" and "Fear the Walking Dead," Sanders also appeared in the action thriller "The Price We Pay" with Emile Hirsch, star of "Into the Wild," "Once Upon a Time," and "The Girl Next Door," a few months before his untimely death.

Sanders' posthumous appearance in the film is scheduled for its January release.

"Tyler was a talented actor with a bright future," Sanders' agent Pedro Tapia told Deadline after his death in June. "He comes from a wonderful family, and we ask that you respect their privacy at this time."
