A disturbing incident unfolded at the Chinese consulate in San Francisco, California, on Monday when an individual crashed a vehicle into the consulate's lobby, according to CNN.

The situation escalated as police responded to the scene, resulting in the suspect being shot and later pronounced dead at the hospital.

The incident occurred around 3:09 PM PT when the driver crashed into the lobby area of the Consulate General of the People's Republic of China, an office primarily responsible for handling visas, according to Sgt. Kathryn Winters, a spokesperson for the San Francisco Police Department.

Law enforcement reacted swiftly, arriving at the scene within minutes. Officers confronted the driver in the consulate's lobby, ultimately resorting to the use of lethal force.

Immediate medical assistance was provided to the suspect by both the police and paramedics from the San Francisco Fire Department. Despite their efforts, the suspect succumbed to their injuries and was pronounced deceased at the hospital.

Sgt. Winters reported, "In spite of the lifesaving efforts of the police officers, firefighter/paramedics, and personnel at the hospital, the suspect was later pronounced deceased at the hospital."

The exact number of individuals present inside the consulate during the incident remains unclear. Sgt. Winters confirmed that no other injuries were reported.

At a subsequent news conference, Sgt. Winters refrained from disclosing the specific reasons for the use of force, whether the suspect was armed, or further details about the individual involved.

The nature of the crash, whether it was intentional, and additional information about the suspect and the incident remain undisclosed at this time.

Cause of the Crash Under Investigation

The aftermath of the crash at the Chinese consulate and the ensuing police activity led to the closure of the intersection of Laguna Street and Geary Boulevard.

The San Francisco Police Department issued an initial alert to the public regarding "ongoing police activity" in the vicinity just prior to 4 PM, Per SFGATE.

The SFPD is actively investigating the incident in collaboration with personnel from the Chinese Consulate and the U.S. State Department.

A witness, identified as Stanford student Sergii Molchanov, shared that he heard the driver shout, "Where's the CCP?" upon exiting the vehicle following the crash.

Molchanov described the incident as "quite terrifying and shocking."

Video footage circulating on social media showed a vehicle inside the consulate building, with officers aiming their weapons at the driver's door while onlookers hurriedly evacuated the premises, NDTV noted.

A spokesperson for the consulate expressed that the suspect's actions constituted a "violent attack" that posed a significant threat to the lives of consulate staff and individuals on-site, resulting in substantial damage.

Crews of local news said they saw a man covered in blood, who appeared unresponsive, being taken away from the scene.

The consulate issued a strong condemnation of the violent attack and called for a thorough investigation into the incident in accordance with the law.

San Francisco, California, home to a substantial Chinese population, including residents from Taiwan, has a complex cultural landscape due to differing views on Taiwan's status between Beijing and Taipei.
