Valerie Harper's cancer is reportedly in remission, and now, the star may even be a contestant in the next season of "Dancing with the Stars." The actress revealed the news in an hour-long special with NBC anchor, Meredith Vieira, which will air next month.

Harper, who played Rhoda Morgenstern in the 1970s sitcom "The Mary Tyler Moore Show," was told that she had terminal cancer and, therefore, only had three months to live at most.

It has been six months since the diagnosis.

Today, Harper's prognosis is a bit more optimistic.

"I'd say that we're getting pretty close to a remission," Dr. Jeremy Rudnick, Harper's physician, told her in a televised interview with the "Today" show.

Harper, 74, invited Vieira to join her as she visited the doctor who works to cure her rare brain cancer.

"I just want to live every moment to the fullest," Harper said in the televised interview with Vieira.

The actress maintains hope that her cancer battle will end with remission.

"Spontaneous remission lives as a possibility," Harper said. "I think infinite possibility is beautiful in every area. A lot of stuff that looks impossible is not, and every day there's evidence of it."

The disease, however, is likely to return. This is especially true if the cancer "develops a resistance to therapy."

"It's not a matter of if," Rudnick said. "It's a matter of when."

Still, Harper and her husband, Tony Cacciotti are grateful for the extended life Harper has enjoyed since the diagnosis.

"Going from having three months to live, or less; we're into our sixth month, and now there's even hope beyond right now we're looking at," Cacciotti said.

"We're looking at Christmas," Harper added.

Rumors reported by TMZ say that Harper will use her newly found hope to dance her way to the top in the 17th season of ABC's "Dancing with the Stars. According to the site, Harper's partner will be dancing professional Tristan MacManus.

Vieira's special with Harper will air Sept. 19 on NBC.

The official cast for "Dancing with the Stars" will be announced on "Good Morning America" Sept. 4.
