'We Dem Boyz' Rapper Wiz Khalifa Fails to Appear in Court; Judge Issues Arrest Warrant
A West Texas judge has issued a warrant for the arrest of rapper Wiz Khalifa after he failed to appear for a scheduled court date Wednesday. The date was set for a marijuana possession charge. Khalifa, whose real name is Cameron Thomaz, was ticketed in May.
Thomaz, 26, was scheduled for an arraignment in El Paso County misdemeanor court. When he did not appear County Court-at-Law Judge Ricardo Herrera issued a bench warrant for the rapper's arrest according to court records.
The charge stemmed from an incident on May 25 when airport security officers arrested Khalifa at El Paso International Airport after finding a small container of marijuana with him. Khalifa was leaving Texas after performing at the local music festival Neon Desert.
Transportation Security Administration said the drugs were discovered after Khalifa was found travelling without identification.
"[This] led to him being sent for secondary screening," officials said. "During that screening, the TSA officer located a metal container inside of the backpack which contained a prohibited item."
He was charged with misdemeanor possession of marijuana, posted $300 bail and was released.
During his brief time behind bars, he tweeted a jail selfie, captioning it with "I wanna drop '28 Grams' but they got me locced up. Soon as I get out, the tapes comin out. Fucc that."
"28 Grams" is the name of Khalifa's most recent mixtape project, which has still not dropped. He also tweeted the hashtag #FreeTrapWiz to his fans before his release a few hours later.
The "We Dem Boyz" rapper has been very public in the past about his marijuana use, commenting on it in media interviews and posting photos on social media discussing his drug use.
Khalifa is married to model Amber Rose, and they have a son, 1-year-old Sebastian, together.
