The companion series to the hit AMC show "The Walking Dead" codenamed "Cobalt" is expected to begin shooting soon. The spinoff will be a prequel to "The Walking Dead" and will be set in LA. The City of Angels will be turned into the city of walkers inspired by the works of "Walking Dead" comic book creator Robert Kirkman, who will act as one of the showrunners if the pilot is picked up for a complete season.

Recently rumors had been speculating at least one character from the current series would make an appearance in the spinoff. But Kirkman squashed those rumors, saying, "I can say that it will be another group of characters, surviving in another part of the world. And it's not going to use any of the core cast from our show. The show will continue uninterrupted, as if the other show doesn't exist. But the other show will kind of be its own entity."

There may still be an appearance by a minor cast remember from the current series. Juan Gabriel Pareja who played Morales, one of the members from Dales camp in the first season, is on the cast list for the pilot episode of "Cobalt."

Cliff Curtis is set to play the male lead with Kim Dickens playing the female lead. Curtis' characterization so far is limited to his being a schoolteacher and "a good man trying to do right by everyone in his life." Dickens will be playing a guidance counselor working at the same school as Curtis.

The companion series is set to premiere next year, and in the meantime, fans of the series are counting the days until "The Walking Dead" returns for the final eight episodes of Season 5 on Feb. 8, 2015.
