The PlayStation 4 seems to be pulling away from its Xbox One counterpart now more than ever after Sony announced that the company had sold more than 5.3 million units ahead of its much-anticipated release in its home country of Japan.

Sony announced in January that the PS4 had outsold the Xbox One two to one in the first month of 2014 and now the company could capitalize on the market in Japan to help boost its numbers even more.

Both Microsoft and Sony have gone head to head since the two companies released the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 consoles back in November of 2013, marking the first new generation of consoles for the two companies since the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

The PS4 enjoyed massive, worldwide success as soon as it was released and more than a million units were sold in the United States on the first day of sales. The Xbox One also sold a million units in the first day, but these numbers were not necessarily comparable considering the fact that the Xbox One was released in more countries and reached far more consumers than the PS4 initially did. After some time, however, the PlayStation 4 ended up having a much wider consumer base around the world than its Microsoft counterpart.

In addition to the superior sales numbers, Sony has even more to brag about now that the company has received high praise for its graphics and gameplay as gamers continue to compare it to the Xbox One version.
