"Modern Family" star Ariel Winter, 17 tweeted on Friday, May 15 that she is now officially emancipated from her family.

Check out Winter's tweet below.

The Los Angeles Times reports that now that she is officially an emancipated minor, Winter is no longer under the control or custody of her parents or guardians and must support herself fully.

"Winter, full name Ariel Winter Workman, no longer needs parental permission to get medical care, apply for a work permit or sign up for school or college, and she can now live wherever she wants," the Los Angeles Times' Nardine Saad writes.

Prior to her emancipation, Winter underwent a long legal battle against her mother Chrisoula Workman that began in 2012 after the Department of Children and Family Services found evidence that Workman emotionally abused Winter, the Hollywood Life reports. Two years after the initial legal battle, Winter's sister Shanelle Gray obtained legal guardianship over Winter, and their father Glenn Workman was put in charge of Winter's finances, the Los Angeles Times adds.

Despite her recent emancipation, Winter still remains close with her sister and father. Winter recently posted an Instagram photo of herself and her father sending her off to prom.

The "Modern Family" star also dedicated an Instagram post to her sister on Mother's Day describing her as both her mother and her sister.

"You're an amazing mother, an amazing sister, and an amazing wife, among many other things," Winter wrote on Instagram.
