Esquire magazine has named actress Emilia Clarke the "Sexiest Woman Alive."

The "Game of Thrones" star was announced as the winner of the annual title on Tuesday, joining the ranks of past sexiest women like Scarlett Johansson, Mila Kunis and Rihanna.

"She manages to bring together a number of opposites, to make them natural: sweetness and toughness, emotionalism with a kind of cold-blooded determination," read the Esquire feature. "Something in these contrasts explains her sex appeal, too. She can play queen and kid sister, dominatrix and pal."

The 28-year-old actress has been having a great year all around. Clarke was also named "Woman of the Year" by GQ magazine, and she had a starring role as Sarah Connor in the summer blockbuster "Terminator Genisys."

Still, it's her role as Daenerys Targaryen aka "Khaleesi, Mother of Dragons" in HBO's hit fantasy series that most fans adore her for. Clarke scored the part in "Game of Thrones" after the initial pilot fell short of expectations, and producers were forced to recast the show in an attempt to save it.

"My agent told the casting director, 'I know that the breakdown for this character is tall and willowy and blonde. I know she's short and round and brown, but I'd like you to see her," Clarke said.

Clarke explained she didn't know very much about the show or the book series it was based on, so she "did what every good actor does and Wikipedia'd the living crap out of it."

Her research gave her enough sense of what producers wanted in their Khaleesi.

"Someone who could grow before your eyes in one season, who could gather strength and show vulnerability, they wanted the arc," Clarke added.

Even with her success, Clarke had to brace herself for the intensity of "Game of Thrones." The excessive nudity and sexual violence was a lot for her to take at first.

"Once, I had to take a little time out," she said. "I said I needed a cup of tea, had a bit of a cry, and was ready for the next scene."

Clarke will return in the sixth season of "Game of Thrones" in spring 2016.
