Marijuana continues to divide society; there are people who are all for it, while others think this drug is really up to no good.

In Australia, the New South Wales Department of Premier and Cabinet recently launched a series of hilarious anti-Marijuana PSAs that features an anthropomorphic sloth to show the bad effects of using pot.

Unfortunately, according to a report by Philly, it has backfired because if the social media reaction were any indication, it was not well received by the very youth they were targeting.

With the tagline "You're Worse On Weed," teens high on the drug are compared to the non-energetic and slow moving animal. And as noted, the series of videos was made by the UK-based ad agency Saatchi & Saatchi.

Huffington Post reported that a spokesperson for the NSW's Department of Premier and Cabinet said, "The campaign has been designed to encourage positive behaviours in young people before bad habits start, and motivate discontinued use of cannabis before they become dependent."

The spokesperson also said that it was intended "To appeal to, and be 'shareable' among, teenagers, who are some of the most vulnerable to cannabis use. We know that younger audiences respond more to campaigns highlighting the short-term consequences of their actions."

And because of its funny nature, countless funny quips and parodies are now spreading online, with one Twitter use even asking, "How high were the people who made this?"

Indeed, the series of anti-Marijuana ads did not really receive its intended reaction because people are not even taking Stoner Sloth seriously. Moreover, there are now reports that next year's hottest Halloween costume will include this hilarious animal.

And not only that, it even have drawn criticism from groups like National Cannabis Prevention and Information Center, Orlando Sentinel has learned.

According to the group, "While we wish the NSW Government luck in future cannabis campaigns, the current Stoner Sloth campaign doesn't reflect NCPIC views on how cannabis harms campaigns should be approached, as was implied by the media."

However, despite the funny ad, getting caught using or possessing the drug does have some serious consequences. The penalties for possessing or using cannabis in Australia range from up to $1,500 in fines and even spending up to two years in jail.

Over the recent years, more and more countries are accepting, or the very least, tolerating the use of the said drug, but it seems Australia is still not one of them.

In the U.S., there are now four states where using and selling weed is legal and specialty Marijuana stores are thriving at an all-time high.

But if the New South Wales Department of Premier and Cabinet can take any solace from the ill-received ads, is that it became viral at least -- just not in the way they imagined.
