Three men's attempt to rob a condom machine Christmas Day by blowing it up ended in tragedy after one of them got hit on the head from the explosion.

The incident reportedly happened in Germany on the western town of Schoeppingen, near the Dutch border.

A 29-year-old man was hit on the head by a steel shard coming from the explosion. According to The Telegraph, he and his two other accomplices attempted to rob a condom machine by attaching a homemade explosion device to it.

The men reportedly ran for cover behind their parked car during the explosion. However, the man, whose identity remains anonymous, reportedly forgot to close his side of the door and was struck on the head by flying debris.

The man was taken by his accomplices to the hospital, leaving behind the scattered money and condoms from the botched machine. However, he did not survive. Upon questioning, the two accomplices said the deceased had hit his head when he fell down the stairs. However, police said one of the men eventually admitted that they had attempted to rob the condom machine by blowing it up.

It was later confirmed that none of the contents from the condom machine were stolen, according to the BBC. The two surviving men were also released from custody after being arrested.

A photo of the blown up machine is posted by MailOnline. The trio had apparently decided to rob a machine planted along the side of the road.

This news has so far received various reactions from readers. MailOnline readers expressed the irony over how the man died. A reader from U.K. named Aggelos wrote, "He should have used protection!" Another anonymous reader said: "New label; Caution condoms do not protect against STDs, or shrapnel."

Meanwhile, a reader named Ambler claiming to have lived in Germany for more than 20 years suspected the men may not have tried to blow up a condom machine. Instead, Ambler suggested that perhaps they were attempting to rob a cigarette machine since condom machines are not placed in public places in Germany but only in toilets.

Fellow MailOnline readers named Taxed to death and Evelyn Steward also questioned the country's choice of location for the said machine. Steward called it an "odd setting" for the condom machine, while reader Taxed to death wrote, "Why would you have a condom machine in the street? Dogging spot or red light district?"
