The first official trailer for USA Network's newest drama, "Queen of the South," is finally here.

According to the Network, the series is based on the novel "La Reina del Sur" by Arturo Pérez-Reverte.

The drama series will tell the story of Teresa Mendoza, a Mexican woman who works to bring down a cartel leader and climb her way up the ranks of the crime organization at the same time, after her boyfriend is murdered.

The role of Mendoza, portrayed by Alice Braga ("Elysium," "I Am Legend"), has already been portrayed on television. The character was popularized by Mexican-American actress Kate del Castillo on Telemundo's hit series bearing the name of the novel.

In the Spanish-language version, Mendoza becomes the most powerful drug trafficker in Southern Spain. However, in the new series, Mendoza seeks refuge in America and runs her drug empire there.

According to a press release received by Latin Post, starring alongside Braga are Veronica Falcón ("Besos de azúcar") as Camila Vargas, Justina Machado ("Six Feet Under") as Brenda Parra, Peter Gadiot ("Tut") as James Valdez, Hemky Madera ("Weeds") as Pote Gálvez, and Gerardo Taracena ("Apocalypto") as César "Batman" Güemes

Back in May, the president of USA Network, Chris McCumber, announced the series and discussed Braga's casting for the lead role, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

"From script to inception, 'Queen of the South' had us hooked," he said. "Alice Braga does an outstanding job playing Teresa Mendoza, a determined woman who defies all odds, to not only survive, but to thrive in an unfamiliar world. The novel has been embraced around the globe, and the telenovela broke records -- now we're looking forward to sharing this unique version of her story on USA."

Serving as executive producers are M.A. Fortin, Joshua John Miller ("The Final Girls"), David Friendly ("Little Miss Sunshine,") and Pancho Mansfield ("Damien").

Fortin and Miller are also responsible for writing the pilot episode, which was directed by Charlotte Sieling.
